Flip over a bottle of kids’ shampoo and you’re met with a wall of long, scientific-sounding words. For most parents it’s overwhelming - so we either trust the front-of-pack claims or grab whatever’s familiar. But learning to read the back of the bottle puts the power back in your hands. Here’s a simple guide.
Front of pack vs back of pack
The front of a bottle is marketing - bold claims, friendly fonts, happy faces. The back is the detail: the ingredient list (often labelled INCI) and the usage information. Both matter, but the back tells you what’s actually inside.
How ingredient lists work
Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, from most to least. So the first few ingredients make up the bulk of the product. For most washes, water (Aqua) comes first, followed by the cleansing agents. The further down the list an ingredient sits, the smaller the amount present.
What to look for
• Gentle cleansing agents suited to children’s skin and hair.
• A formula designed for your child’s age group - “kids” isn’t the same as “baby” or “adult.”
• A reasonable, not overwhelming, fragrance.
• Clear, easy-to-follow usage instructions.
Sensible questions to ask
• Is this made for my child’s age range?
• Does the brand explain its ingredients clearly?
• Does the claim on the front line up with the formula on the back?
You don’t need a chemistry degree - you need a brand that’s transparent and willing to explain itself.
